In Part One, we explored the language investigators use when asking whether something is trying to communicate. EVP, intelligent response, residual haunting. Those terms all circle the same fundamental question: is there a sender on the other end of this signal?
Today I want to move from the question of contact to the question of method. Because even if something extraordinary is happening in a location, the way you investigate it determines whether you can say anything meaningful about what you found. Three terms define responsible investigation more than almost any others, and I want to spend some time with each of them.
EMF: The Tool Everyone Recognizes and Few People Fully Understand
If you have watched more than twenty minutes of any paranormal television program, you have seen an EMF detector. It is usually a small handheld device that beeps or flashes when it picks up fluctuations in the electromagnetic field of the surrounding environment. An investigator waves it around a room, it spikes, and the implication is clear: something is here.
The reality is considerably more complicated, and understanding that complexity is what separates a serious investigator from someone playing with a prop.
Electromagnetic fields are physical fields produced by electrically charged objects. They are present everywhere, generated by power lines, appliances, wiring, electronic devices, and certain geological formations. A faulty electrical outlet, an old refrigerator motor, a dimmer switch, these can all produce readings that an uninformed investigator might misidentify as significant.
The theoretical connection between EMF and paranormal activity actually runs in two directions, and this is where it gets genuinely interesting. One theory holds that entities generate or disrupt electromagnetic fields as a byproduct of attempting to manifest or communicate, meaning a spike in EMF could indicate a presence. The other direction, developed substantially by neuroscientist Michael Persinger at Laurentian University in Ontario, runs the opposite way entirely: that exposure to certain electromagnetic frequencies can induce sensory disturbances, including feelings of unease, disorientation, and even apparition-like experiences, meaning the EMF itself might be causing what people interpret as a haunting rather than responding to one.
One case discussed by Persinger and his colleagues involved a teenager who reported receiving nocturnal visits from a supernatural presence. Investigation revealed that an electric clock positioned near her bed was generating electromagnetic pulses with waveforms similar to those known to trigger seizure activity. When the clock was removed, the experiences stopped (Persinger, Koren, & O'Connor, 2001).
The Psi Encyclopedia also documents a case in which occupants of a home reported paranormal experiences and unusual physical sensations that were later traced to a faulty electrical supply cable, with the phenomena fading after the cable was repaired (Psi Encyclopedia, n.d.).
Both of those cases point in the same direction: high or unusual EMF in a location is not automatically evidence of paranormal activity. It may itself be the explanation for what people are experiencing.
Here is the honest position I hold after fifteen years of investigation. EMF is a useful tool when it is used carefully, when readings are documented systematically, when ordinary sources are ruled out, and when spikes are correlated with other observations rather than treated as standalone evidence. Used that way, EMF data contributes to a picture. Used carelessly, it contributes to noise.
Which brings me to the term I consider the most important in the entire field.
Baseline: The Foundation of Everything
If I could require every paranormal investigator to master one concept before stepping foot in a location, it would be this one.
A baseline is a thorough assessment of what is normal in a given environment before any investigation begins. Normal EMF readings throughout the space. Normal sounds and their sources. Normal temperature ranges and fluctuations. Normal patterns of light and shadow at different times of day and night. Normal settling sounds from the structure itself.
The reason this matters so fundamentally is simple. You cannot identify what is anomalous unless you first know what is ordinary.
Without a baseline, every creak of a settling house becomes potential evidence. Every draft becomes a presence. Every spike on an EMF meter becomes a signal rather than a reflection of the building's wiring. The absence of baseline data does not make a location more mysterious. It makes the investigation meaningless, because you have no standard against which to measure anything you find.
I spend significant time on baseline assessment in my RCIP methodology, and I want to be honest about why. It is not the exciting part of investigation. It does not make for compelling television. Establishing a baseline requires patience, systematic documentation, and a willingness to spend the first portion of an investigation simply learning what a location sounds and feels like when nothing is happening.
That discipline is precisely what makes the moments when something does happen worth paying attention to. When I can say that the EMF in a particular room ran consistently at a certain level for two hours and then spiked in a pattern that correlated with a direct question from the investigation team, that observation carries weight. When I cannot say that, because I never established what normal looked like, the spike means nothing.
Baseline is not a formality. It is the foundation that every other observation rests on.
Matrixing: What the Mind Does When the Evidence Is Ambiguous
I want to close Part Two with what I believe is the most important concept for anyone who wants to investigate responsibly, and it sits directly at the intersection of communication theory and perceptual psychology.
Matrixing, known in scientific literature as pareidolia, refers to the brain's tendency to impose familiar and meaningful patterns onto ambiguous sensory input. We see faces in clouds. We hear words in static. We find figures in shadows. This is not a flaw in human perception. It is a feature, an evolutionary adaptation that helped our ancestors detect threats and recognize other people quickly and efficiently.
In the context of paranormal investigation, it is a phenomenon that every honest investigator must account for at every stage of the work.
When I examine a photograph and notice what appears to be a face in a darkened corner, before I draw any conclusion I have to ask a hard question: am I seeing something that is genuinely there, or is my pattern-seeking brain doing what it was designed to do? The same question applies to EVP recordings. The same question applies to shadows observed at the edge of vision in a dimly lit room. The same question applies to the spirit box response that seems to answer a question directly.
Research published in PLOS ONE found that people who reported more paranormal experiences showed enhanced susceptibility to pareidolia, perceiving meaningful patterns in ambiguous stimuli more readily than those with fewer paranormal experiences (Williams & Blagrove, 2022). That finding cuts both ways. It might mean that people with genuine paranormal sensitivity are more attuned to subtle signals. It might also mean that prior experience creates a perceptual bias toward finding what you are looking for. Holding both possibilities honestly is not weakness. It is what serious investigation requires.
The discipline of rigorously ruling out matrixing is what makes the evidence that remains genuinely remarkable. If I have examined every ordinary explanation for what I am seeing or hearing, and none of them account for it, what remains carries considerably more weight than if I simply assumed significance from the start.
Putting It Together
EMF, baseline, matrixing. Three terms that answer the same underlying question: how do we investigate in a way that produces findings worth trusting?
The tools matter. The methodology matters. And the willingness to question your own perception matters most of all. That combination is what distinguishes investigation from belief, and it is what I have tried to build into every aspect of how I approach this work.
In Part Three of Speaking Paranormal, I will move into some of the most emotionally charged terms in the field, the language investigators use when experiences become deeply personal and deeply frightening: apparitions, shadow people, and the claims that generate the most controversy of all.
