I have lost count of how many times someone has pulled me aside after a keynote or sent me a message through my website to tell me some version of the same story.


They moved into a new home. Within the first few days, something felt off. A creak they could not place. A shadow at the edge of vision. A room that felt heavier than the others. An unsettling sense, arriving without explanation, that they were not entirely alone.


And then, almost always, they ask me the same question.


"Do you think my new place is haunted?"


My answer is almost always the same too. Not because I dismiss the question, but because I think the more interesting question is a different one entirely.

Not: is the new home haunted?


But: why does every new home feel that way at first?


Your Brain Is Doing Its Job

Here is something I want you to understand before we go any further. That uneasy feeling you get in a new and unfamiliar space is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is a sign that something is working exactly as it should.


The human brain evolved over hundreds of thousands of years in environments where unfamiliar territory represented genuine danger. An unknown space might contain predators, hazards, or threats that a familiar space would not. The amygdala, a small structure deep in the brain responsible for processing potential danger, responds to unfamiliar environments by increasing alertness and threat sensitivity before conscious thought even has a chance to weigh in (Zawilinski, 2020). This heightened state, known as hypervigilance, causes us to notice things we would ordinarily filter out. Sounds register more sharply. Shadows carry more weight. The creaks of a settling structure that we would sleep through in a familiar home suddenly demand our attention in a new one.


Research confirms that unfamiliar environments reliably elevate the brain's threat detection systems, with studies showing that relocation and exposure to unknown spaces increase baseline cortisol levels and prime the nervous system to scan for potential danger (Science Times, 2026). In plain terms, your body treats a new home the way your ancestors treated an unexplored cave. Proceed carefully until you know what you are dealing with.


This is not paranormal sensitivity. This is biology. And it explains something I have watched happen dozens of times in my own practice: the experiences that feel most intense and most unexplainable almost always cluster in the first few days or weeks after someone moves somewhere new.


The Space That Hasn't Become Yours Yet

There is another layer here that I find genuinely fascinating from a communication standpoint.


A home is not just a physical structure. It is a communication environment, a space saturated with meaning, familiarity, and the accumulated associations of daily life. When you have lived somewhere long enough, that space speaks to you in a language you have learned to read fluently. You know which floorboards creak and why. You know how the light moves through the rooms at different times of day. You know what the furnace sounds like when it kicks on, what the wind does to the windows in a storm, what the neighborhood sounds like at two in the morning.


In a new home, you do not speak that language yet. Every sound is potentially significant because you have not yet built the context that would tell you it is not. Every unfamiliar smell, every unexpected draft, every shadow in a corner you have not fully explored, all of it arrives without the interpretive framework that familiarity provides. And in the absence of that framework, the brain fills the gap with the most evolutionarily cautious interpretation available.


Something might be here.


I have noticed this in my own experience every time I have moved somewhere new. The discomfort is sharpest in the first days, when everything is unknown. It fades gradually as I learn the space, as the unfamiliar becomes familiar, as the sounds and shadows acquire ordinary explanations.


The space does not change. You do.


That process is not supernatural. But it is deeply human, and I think it deserves more attention than it typically gets.


Why Certain Spaces Trigger More Than Others

Not all rooms in a new home feel equally unsettling, and that is not random.


Attics, basements, and enclosed spaces that feel separate from the main living area tend to generate the strongest responses. These spaces are typically darker, less frequented, and further from the ambient sounds and light that orient us in ordinary life. They are, in a very real sense, more unknown than the rest of the home, and the brain responds to that additional layer of unfamiliarity with a corresponding increase in alertness.


Add to that the cultural associations we carry into these spaces. Generations of folklore, literature, and film have established attics and basements as the locations where the uncanny lives. We do not enter these spaces with a blank perceptual slate. We enter them carrying a picture, in Walter Lippmann's sense of the word, already primed toward certain kinds of experience (Lippmann, 1922). That priming shapes what we notice and how we interpret it before we have observed a single thing.


None of this means that nothing unusual ever happens in attics or basements. It means that any serious investigator has to account for what they bring to a space before drawing conclusions about what the space is giving back.


What Pets Are Actually Telling You

Almost every conversation I have had with someone who believes their new home is haunted includes a detail about their animals. The dog who will not enter a certain room. The cat who stares at an empty corner. The pet who seems nervous in ways they were not in the previous home.


I take animal behavior seriously. Animals perceive the world through sensory channels that differ significantly from our own, and there is genuine scientific interest in the question of what they detect that we do not. But I also want to offer a simpler explanation that often gets overlooked.


Your pets just moved too.


They are navigating the same unfamiliar environment you are, with the same absence of established context, and with sensory systems that are in some ways more sensitive than yours. A new home contains hundreds of unfamiliar smells, sounds, and spatial configurations that your animals are processing for the first time. Their caution near certain areas may reflect genuine sensitivity to something you cannot detect. It may also reflect exactly what your own caution reflects: a careful mammal learning the geography of an unknown space before deciding it is safe.


Both possibilities are worth holding. Neither one requires the conclusion that something paranormal is present.


What I Do When the Feeling Arrives

People are sometimes surprised when I tell them what I do in a new home. If I find myself feeling uneasy, I simply introduce myself aloud. I say that I am the new resident, that I intend to treat the home with respect, and that if anything else is here, I ask for the same courtesy in return.


I do not do this because I know something is present. I do it because it reminds me of something I have learned over years of investigation: respect costs nothing.


The Baseline That Changes Everything

One of the first things I teach investigators is to establish a baseline. Before deciding a house is unusual, you have to learn what is normal. What I have come to realize is that this applies not just to locations but to yourself.


When you move into a new home, you are not yet a reliable instrument. Your threat detection system is elevated, your interpretive framework is incomplete, and your perceptual filters are set to maximum sensitivity. That is not a criticism. That is just where you are in the process of learning a new space.


Give it time. Learn the sounds. Walk the rooms at different hours. Let the unfamiliar become familiar. And if something remains unexplained after all of that, after you have established the baseline and built the fluency and let your nervous system settle into the new environment, that is when the question of whether something unusual is present becomes worth asking seriously.


More often than not, the house is not haunted. It is unfamiliar. And unfamiliar, given enough time and attention, always becomes home.
